Rich-text Editor

While the Text module consists of only a rich-text editor, many other modules implement this. Included are the Blog/News module, the Calendar module, the Links module, and the FAQ module, to name a few.

Align center

Function: Aligns a paragraph, image, or video from the middle of the region.

Location:

Align center is the eighth button from the right on the top row of the editor.

Align left

Function: Aligns a paragraph from the left, to the left margin

Location:

Align left is the ninth button from the right on the top row of the editor.

Align right

Function: Aligns a paragraph from the right, to the right margin.

Align right is the sixth button from the right on the top row of the editor.

Bold (Ctrl+B)

Function: Makes the appearance of the highlighted text appear bold.

Shortcut: Ctrl+B or Cmd+B

Location:

Bold is the seventh button from the left on top row of the editor. Text must be highlighted before it can be bolded.

Copy (Ctrl+C)

Function: Copies the highlighted text/images/media and places it onto the clipboard. The original formatting is left intact, generally.
Please note, this button does not function on all browsers, please use the shortcut instead.

Shortcut: Ctrl+C or Cmd+C

Location:

Copy is the fourth button from the left on the top row of the editor. Text must be highlighted before it can be copied. This button does not work on all browsers, use Ctrl+C or Cmd+C instead.

Cut (Ctrl+X)

Function: Removes highlighted text/images/media from the editor and places it onto the clipboard.

Shortcut: Ctrl+X or Cmd+X

Location:

Cut is the third button from the left on the top row of the editor. Text must be highlighted before it can be cut. This button does not work on all browsers, use Ctrl+X or Cmd+X instead.

Edit HTML Source

Function: Brings up the HTML Source Editor. This is for users with a basic knowledge of HTML.

Location:

Edit HTML source is the first button from the right on the bottom row of the editor.

Font size

Function: Changes the font size of the highlighted text.

Location:

Font size is the second dropdown from the left on the bottom row of the editor. Text must be highlighted before it can be altered.

Horizontal Rule

Function: Adds a horizontal rule (thin line) to the page.

Location:

Horizontal Rule is the sixth button from the right on the top row of the editor. It adds a line wherever the cursor is.

Indent

Function: Indents the paragraph by 20 pixels, roughly one line space or indents a list item in a level. Can be used many times on the same paragraph/list item.

Location:

Indent is the eleventh button on the top row of the editor.

Insert column after

Function: Inserts a column to the right of the current column in a table. Current being either highlighted or simply where the blinking cursor is.

Location:

Insert column after is the fifth button from the right on the bottom row of the editor. A table cell must be selected before a column can be added.

Insert column before

Function: Inserts a column to the left of the current column in a table. Current being either highlighted or simply where the blinking cursor is.

Location:

Insert column before is the sixth button from the right on the bottom row of the editor. A table cell must be selected before a column can be added.

Insert row after

Function: Inserts a row below the current row in a table. Current being either highlighted or simply where the blinking cursor is.

Location:

Insert row after is the eighth button from the right on the bottom row of the editor. A table cell must be selected before a row can be added.

Insert row before

Function: Inserts a row above the current row in a table. Current being either highlighted or simply where the blinking cursor is.

Location:

Insert row before is the ninth button from the right on the bottom row of the editor. A table cell must be selected before a row can be added.

Insert/edit anchor

Function: Places an anchor or hash link that can be linked to within a page.  View the Link tutorials for more details.

Location:

Insert/edit anchor is the third button from the right on the top row of the editor. The anchor will be inserted at the beginning of the paragraph selected when the button is clicked.

Insert/edit embedded media

Function: Opens the Insert/edit embedded media dialogue.

Location:

Insert/edit embedded media is the first button from the right on the top row of the editor.

Insert/edit image

Function: Opens the Insert/edit image dialogue. View the tutorial on in-text images.

Location:

Insert/edit image is the second button from the right on the top row of the editor.

Insert/edit table

Function: Brings up the dialogue to insert a new table.

Location:

Insert/edit table or Inserts a new table is the third button/fifth option on the bottom row of the editor.

Italicize (Ctrl+I)

Function: Makes the appearance of the highlighted text appear italic or slanted.

Shortcut: Ctrl+I or Cmd+I

Location:

Italic is the eighth button from the left on the top row of the icon. Text must be highlighted before it can be italicized.

Merge table cells

Function: Merges highlighted cells in a table.

Location:

Merge cells is the second button from the right on the bottom row of the editor. Successive table cells must be hightlighted to merge.

Ordered List

Function: Creates an item list with numbers. Multiple list items are created by pressing the Return or Enter key. Items can be removed from an unordered list by pressing this button.

Location:

Ordered list is the tenth button on the top row of the editor. Use RETURN to create a new list item. Click the button again to remove an item from a list.

Outdent

Function: Removes the indentation on a paragraph or moves a list item out a level. Can only be used after the indent button has been used; top level list items will be removed from the list.

Location:

Outdent is the twelfth button from the left on the top row of the editor. Text must have been indented before being outdented.

Paste (Ctrl+V)

Function: Pastes whatever has been most recently copied or cut into the rich-text editor.

Shortcut: Ctrl+V or Cmd+V

Location:

Paste is the fifth button from the left on the top row of the editor. Text or other media must be copied before it can be pasted. This button does not work on all browsers, use Ctrl+V or Cmd+V instead.

Paste from Word

Function: Pastes whatever has been most recently copied or cut into the text editor, but removes some excess formatting from word processors like Microsoft Office Word.

Location:

Paste from Word is the sixth button on the top row of the editor. Text or other media must be copied before it can be pasted.

Redo (Ctrl+Y)

Function: Redoes an action the Undo button undid.

Shortcut: Ctrl+Y or Cmd+Y

Location:

Redo is the second button from the left on the top row of the editor. An action must be undone before it can be redone.

Remove column

Function: Removes the current column, and all its contents, in a table. Current being either highlighted or simply where the blinking cursor is.

Location:

Remove or delete column is the fourth button from the right on the bottom row of the editor. A table cell must be selected before a column can be deleted.

Remove formatting

Function: Removes any extra formatting on the text, e.g. changing the font format, size, or color.

Location:

Remove formatting is the second button/fourth option from the left on the bottom row of the editor. Use Ctrl+A or Cmd+A to highlight everything and remove all extraneous formatting at once.

Remove row

Function: Deletes the current row, and all its contents, in a table. Current being either highlighted or simply where the blinking cursor is.

Location:

Remove or delete row is the seventh button from the right on the bottom row of the editor. A table cell must be selected before a row can be deleted.

Split merged table cells

Function: Brings up a dialogue to split table cells after they have been merged.

Location:

Split merged cells is the third button from the right on the bottom row of the editor. Cells must have been merged to be split.

Table cell properties

Function: Brings up the dialogue on the properties of the cells in the selected table.

Location:

Table Row Properties is the fifth button/seventh option from the left on the bottom row of the editor.

Table row properties

Function: Brings up the dialogue on the properties of the rows in the selected table.

Location:

Table Row Properties is the fourth button/sixth option from the left on the bottom row of the editor.

Text color

Function: Changes the color of the highlighted text.

Location:

Text color is the first button/third option from the left on the bottom row of the editor. Text must be highlighted before it can be altered.

Text format

Function: Changes the text format to the styles chosen through the design process.

  • Heading 1 ← largest heading size
  • Heading 2, Heading 3 ← smaller heading sizes
  • Paragraph ← body text

Location:

Text Format is the first dropdown from the left on the bottom row of the editor. It displays Paragraph by default.

Undo (Ctrl+Z)

Function: Deletes the previous action made.

Shortcut: Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z

Location:

Undo is the first button from the left on the top row of the editor. An action must be made before it can be undone.

Unordered List

Function: Creates an item list with bullets. Multiple list items are created by pressing the Return or Enter key. Items can be removed from an unordered list by pressing this button.
